A mesocosm system called AquaFlow was used to investigate the effects of treated wastewater on the microbial community of a freshwater stream. Three mesocosm systems were used as controls containing only stream water, and three systems were treated with 33 % treated wastewater. Over a period of 10 days, water samples were taken and used for 16S rRNA gene sequencing and shotgun metagenomics.
