Heterotrophic N2 fixing bacteria seem to be ubiquitous in marine pelagic environments. Their contribution to the pool of fixed N in the oceans is, however, unknown. To estimate N2 fixation related traits and potential, three heterotrophic N2-fixing bacteria were isolated from Baltic Sea surface water. Their genomes were sequenced and their autecology was investigated.
