Perylene diimide (PDI) and its derivatives, known for being n-type organic semiconductors, have shown significant promise in photocatalytic applications. PDI’s large conjugated planar structure enables strong absorption in the visible-light spectrum and provides exceptional stability. Meanwhile, the electron-deficient nature of the diimide groups at each end contributes to a unique donor-acceptor structure. Those make PDI an ideal candidate for visible-light-driven photocatalysis. However, PDI’s poor solubility and strong tendency to aggregate, significantly hinder its use in catalytic transformations. To overcome these challenges, carefully modifying PDI molecules by incorporating small molecules into framework materials offers a promising strategy to break the aggregation and enhance their photocatalytic performance. This thesis explores the integration of PDI active units into various framework structures to significantly enhance photostability and photocatalytic activity in heterogeneous systems.
