National Freight Network in Kentucky

<p>This feature layer represents portions of Kentucky’s road network that are part of the National Highway System (NHS)—a network of highways deemed nationally significant and approved by Congress. The NHS includes the Interstate System and over 100,000 miles of arterial and other key roadways that support the nation’s mobility, economy, and national defense. The National Highway System Designation Act of 1995 (Public Law 104-59) formally established the NHS on November 28, 1995. Although the NHS makes up only 4% of the nation’s total road miles and 7% of lane miles, it carries over 44% of the nation’s travel volume.&nbsp;</p><p>While NHS routes exist in both urban and rural areas, most travel on the system occurs in urban areas due to higher population density and economic activity.
