Phases of Refugee Integration in the Danish Society, 1980-1985

The purpose of the survey is to obtain information for statistical and scientific assessment of the problems regarding housing conditions, employment, income, sources of income, education, use of the social and health service sectors, language, culture and spare time activities, and social contacts experienced by refugees who had come to Denmark in the period 1980-1985: # The following information is included from the questionnaires: # #1. Personal information: the respondent's sex, age, nationality, # citizenship, refugee status. # #2. Arrival: duration of stay in a refugee camp, family reunion, # contact with the Danish Refugee Council's local centre. # #3. Family: nationality and place of residence in or outside # Denmark of the respondent's spouse, the respondent's and the # family's contact with family in or outside Denmark, plans # for family reunion. # #4. Children: Child-minding: day-care institutions, school, # contact with children of the same nationality, language, # lessons in their mother tongue, satisfaction with Denmark # of the respondent's children. # #5. Housing conditions: number of rooms, ownership, type of # dwelling, number of refugees, satisfaction with dwelling # compared with the Danes and compared with the native country, # wish to move, wish to get a new dwelling (situation, # dwelling standard). # #6. a) Neighbours (friends), Danish: contact with Danish # neighbours, Danish friends, forms of contact with Danish # friends, need for Danish friends, experience of negative # attitudes of Danish neighbours. # # b) Same nationality: presence of and contact with people # of the same nationality in the residential area, forms of # contact, advantages/disadvantages of housing several # refugees in the same residential area. # #7. Employment: education and occupation in the native country # of the respondent and the respondent's spouse, educations # commenced and completed in Denmark, reason for non-completion # of educations in Denmark. # Occupation in Denmark, sideline, type of firm, size of # firm, number of hours of gainful employment a week, placing # of the working hours, problems at place of work, wish to get # a new job, employment periods, women's wish to get gainful # employment, unemployment. # #8. Education: school, vocational education, plans for further # education, satisfaction with education, education support. # #9. Income: sources of household income, total family gross # income in 1987. # #10. Spare time: spare time activities, membership of a national # association, visits to other people, guests in the home, # Danish TV, TV News, newspaper reading (Danish - foreign # newspapers), wish regarding types of national activities, # participation in such activities. # #11. Religion: religious affiliation, and which activities are # part of the respondent's everyday life, changes of religious # affiliation in Denmark, need for religious community centres. # #12. Language: keeping up of the mother tongue, proficiency in # Danish, satisfaction with instruction in Danish, situations # in which language problems may arise. # #13. Danes, Danish conditions: knowledge of Danish culture, # negative/positive opinion of Danish culture and norms, # interest of Danes regarding foreign culture (the culture # of the native country), plans of returning to the native # country, wish for Danish citizenship. # #14. Public authorities: contact with the Danish Refugee Council # (Dansk Flygtningehjælp), advisory service for refugees in # the municipality and use, if any, of this service, frequency # and type of contact with the public assistance administrative # department of the municipality, satisfaction with the contact # with the department, contact with the Labour Exchange, # contact in connection with school problems, use within the # next year of general practitioner, dentist, hospital, # psychologist, psychological assistance/help, opinion of the # refugee policy of the municipality. # #15.
