We have isolated mutants in the petal identity gene PhDEF in petunia, affecting petal identity in one layer of the petal only. "star" flowers express PhDEF in the petal mesophyll only, "wico" flowers express PhDEF in the petal epidermis only. We have sequenced these mutant flowers to understand how petal identity is specified from different cell layers.
