Soil function maps describe the actual state of the soil and serve the authorities as well as external planners as a fundamental basis for assessment. They show soil areas that, due to their rarity, their natural soil fertility or their position in the overall structure of the natural environment, are particularly worthy of protection and also represent the different soil functions.

The soil function map, which was completed in December 2017, serves as a guiding tool for the identification and protection of soils worthy of protection. The aim is to use the finite resource sparingly and gently. The soil function map is therefore used, among other things, in the area of municipal planning processes as in the evaluation of interventions.
