Striga is a genus of obligate, root hemi-parasitic plants within the Orobanchaceae. One species in particular, S. hermonthica, is a notorious parasite of rain-fed rice, maize, sorghum and millets, leading to devastating losses in crop yields for resource-poor farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
