A dam where a dam failure can lead to consequences with significance from a societal point of view or risks human life shall have a dam safety class. Chapter 11, Sections 24-26 of the Environmental Code describes the conditions for a dam to be classified in a dam safety class. It is the supervisory authority, normally the county administrative board, which, with the support of impact assessments, makes decisions on dam safety class in accordance with the Environmental Code for dams within the county’s geographical area. Svenska kraftnät is the supervisory guidance authority on issues relating to dust safety in accordance with Chapter 11 of the Environmental Code and supports the work with impact assessments and dam safety classification through guidance and information.
