Wilmington and Long Beach "Get Out and Push" street railroad (or open-air train), 1887

The Wilmington & Long Beach Rapid Transit Railroad -- built by Judge Widney -- connected Long Beach (Willmore) with Southern Pacific lines in Wilmington. It was called the G.O.P.R.R. (get out and push railroad) since passengers often had to push the train over a hill. The passenger car behind it, in which several people are visible as well as their luggage, was once an old horse-drawn trolley car. Several passengers sit in the shade of an awning over the wooden car. The engineer leans out over the sidewall of his small engine. A plank walkway flanks the train to its left and the train is on an incline. Part of a building can be seen in the background to the right.; Photoprint reads: "American Colony built rail line from Souther Pacific to the town sitte. Called the G.O.P.R.R. (get out and push railroad) since passengers had to push the train over a hill. The passenger car was an old horse car in disguise. The G.O.P. connected Willmore City with 'the whole railway system of the United States'".
