Where the current goes: simulation pipeline, source data, and results for a spectral and energetic benchmark of eight neurostimulation waveforms across eight target tissues
收藏资源简介:
Rectangular biphasic pulses are the industrial default in deep brain stimulation, cardiac pacing, cochlear implants, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. The choice dates from mid-twentieth-century hardware constraints and has never been systematically revisited against modern signal-theoretic criteria. This dataset accompanies a spectral and energetic benchmark of eight candidate stimulation waveforms across eight target tissues that puts the industrial rectangle back in a comparative frame. The waveform panel comprises the plain rectangular biphasic pulse, the rectangle with interphase gap, the clinical asymmetric 1:9 rectangle, the symmetric triangle, the half sine, the truncated Gaussian of Wongsarnpigoon and Grill (2010), the exponential decay, and a smooth cubic Bézier introduced in the companion article. Each tissue is modelled as a Foster II network fitted to four-dispersion Cole-Cole parameters from the IT'IS Foundation database (version 5.0), itself a curated extension of Gabriel, Lau and Gabriel (1996). The 64 combinations (8 waveforms across 8 tissues) are simulated with ngspice 46 under a reference geometry (1 cm² slab, 1 mm thick, 50 Ω source impedance) and evaluated on four independent metrics: spectral leakage above 2 kHz for voltage and current, faradaic-capacitive energy partition, peak current per unit delivered charge, and cyclic charge imbalance. The dataset provides the campaign master file (64 rows, 28 columns) directly at the top level for one-click auditing, plus a single archive containing the full source tree: raw tissue parameters, Foster synthesis code and pre-generated ngspice subcircuits, waveform library, campaign runner, figure-generation scripts, and ngspice deck templates. Byte-level reproducibility is achievable under a documented condition (PYTHONHASHSEED=0). Content is dual-licensed: MIT for source code and derived SPICE artefacts, Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 for data files. The smooth cubic Bézier waveform introduced in the study is released for unrestricted use, without royalty or licence fee, in research protocols, medical devices, clinical procedures, and commercial products. The prior publication of the waveform in the archived preprint constitutes public prior art. Companion articleDelalande, B. and Tamagawa, H. (2026).
