Ground deformation monitoring in Terceira Island 2025, Azores (2026-01-28)

In 2025, the Santa Bárbara volcano on Terceira Island, Azores, experienced renewed seismic activity following a period of relative calm that had led to the lowering of the alert level to v2. On November 6, 2025, the Universidade dos Açores reinstated the v3 alert for the volcano, citing a continued rise in seismicity. At the same time, the fissure system of Terceira Island remains under v2 alert, directly associated with volcanic processes. The objective of the current activation is to obtain updated 2025-2026 information on crustal deformation in the Santa Bárbara volcano area, in order to support evacuation planning, identification of structures at risk, and overall risk-mitigation measures.
