Ecosystem Functions Inventory of Mountain Watersheds in Patagonia v1.0

This dataset comprises two complementary data files generated from a coordinated monitoring effort across 12 mountain watersheds in the Aysén Region of Chilean Patagonia. The first file, Raw_cluster_data.xlsx, contains original field data collected at the cluster and plot level, including detailed measurements of forest structure, species composition, regeneration, deadwood, avifauna, and site characteristics. The second file, Ecosystem_functions_by_cluster.xlsx, includes processed indicators of ecosystem functions—such as carbon stocks, biomass production, soil formation, erosion, and species richness—standardized to per-hectare values. Together, these datasets support spatial and ecological analyses at multiple scales, enabling the evaluation of ecosystem service supply, biodiversity patterns, and the biophysical responses of temperate mountain forests to environmental drivers. The data are suitable for use in ecological modeling, conservation planning, and long-term environmental monitoring. In addition, the full R scripts used to process the raw dataset and derive each ecosystem function are provided. These scripts ensure transparency and reproducibility by documenting every step from the original measurements to the final ecosystem function indicators. The database has been updated to include two major corrections regarding ecosystem functions. First, CORR-001 fixes the dead wood carbon reconstruction by replacing an accidental right_join with a left_join, which ensures that all 88 protocol clusters and 264 plots are retained, properly representing the absence of standing dead trees (snags) with a value of zero instead of excluding the entire cluster. Second, CORR-002 repairs the wood energy volume calculation by replacing missing components with zeros before summation rather than performing a direct addition of vectors containing NA values; this adjustment recovers 71 previously blank plots and explicitly accounts for 81 structural zeros in the systematic universe, with all units corrected to m3/ha.
