EUYO orchestra members: nationalities, gender, membership status and years of participation 1978 to 2025

Unified panal dataset, in .csv and .xlsx formats, drawn from publicly available pdf archival brochures (yearbooks) published on the European Union Youth Orchestra website containing names, nationalities, years of participation and participation status (full orchestra members, summer school participants, or invited guests) from 1978 to 2025. This was initially manually coded and then verified against OCR extracted data. Names were preprocessed through deterministic normalization and the creation of token fingerprints. Several blocking keys were generated (including last-name + first-initial combinations) to reduce comparison space. Candidate matches were evaluated through phonetic bucketing and high-threshold fuzzy string matching (Python’s SequenceMatcher: similarity threshold circa τ = 0.92). Instrument labels were normalized to canonical names and then grouped into orchestral families: Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Harp, Keyboard and Other. Gender is recorded incompletely, and via a conservative 'gender as presented' approach drawing on (i) first-name prevalence in relation to the member’s recorded nationality/nationalities and language context, and (ii) publicly available roster photographs, which are included for most seasons. This, notably captures externally and subjectively perceived gender presentation and may not reflect that individual's self-identification historically or presently.
