All metal patch circularly polarized S-band antennas are being developed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the Lunar Farside Seismic Suite (FSS). The antennas are proposed to be used as a telecommunication antenna between 2.2 and 2.3 GHz. A single element and 2 × 2 elements patch excited cup antennas have been developed for wide beam circular polarization over 60° elevation angle while surviving the harsh temperature variations during the Lunar day and night. The antenna prototypes have been fabricated and tested and they fulfil the performance requirements.
