Lab 3: Techniques lab animals- pan traps

Group members: Winnie Zhao, Yu Xiao, Kristine Georgilopoulos- Gulli This experiment was conducted on October 3rd, 2014 at 2:30 pm at York University- Keele campus . The weather on that day was rainy and windy. Ten multicoloured solo bowls (5 white, 4 white, 1 yellow) were placed in alternate colours in two different rows that were 10 cm apart from each other in the woodlot region. Another ten multicoloured solo bowls (4 white, 3 yellow, 3 blue) were also placed in alternate colours in two different rows that were 10 cm away from each other in the grassland region. All of the solo bowls were half filled with soapy water and were left in their position for 90 minutes. After 90 minutes, the bowls were observed and data was collected. The data collected included recording how many insects were found in each of the bowls, identifying each insect that was found in each of the bowls and also making note of the colour of each of the bowls that had insects trapped in it. This experiment was conducted to see if there was a relationship between the amount of insects collected and the colour of the bowls. The purpose of this experiment was also to test if the region (grassland or woodlot) would have an impact on the amount of insects found in the solo bowls. Please note that the data obtained in this experiment may not be representative due to the weather conditions.
