Talaromyces marneffei , formerly named Penicillium marneffei, is well known as an important thermal dimorphic pathogenic fungus, which is able to cause fatal systemic infections in human. Disseminated Talaromyces marneffei infection could occur in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts. The mortality rate is significantly high if appropriate systemic antifungal therapy can not be given timely. Talaromyces marneffei is mainly endemic in Southeast Asia and southern China. Bamboo rat is known to act as natural reservoir host.
