Both Apricaphanius species are endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. They inhabit aquatic environments with different chemical compositions (from freshwater to saltwater ecosystems) in the Mediterranean (A. iberus) and South Atlantic (A. baeticus) regions of the peninsula. The first Reference Genome obtained for a Euroasian cyprinodontiform will be relevant to decipher evolutionary questions related to the adaptation of this endangered species to varying environmental conditions, providing insights for local adaptation processes. A set of whole-genome resequecing genomes of A. baeticus has been also sequenced along two different time periods and encompassing all known populations.
