RESEARCH BACKGROUND Eureka is unique for its development of a spatial metaphor for image collections and explorations between digital space and spatial sound. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION The initial Eureka prototypes of 2002-03 were a pioneering example of the meaningful use of digital space as an interface for image content. This paradigm is now gaining momentum in contemporary web and interface design. The key insights of Eureka were that three-dimensional interfaces allow users a sense of perspective in their information collection and that spatial sound is a good means for aiding the experiential qualities of space. However, quantitative techniques for marrying image and sound are usually less successful. Greg More's project proposes that spatial thinking and the architectural consideration of interface design can aid in the arrangement and reconfiguration of digital data scapes. As such, Eureka was developed within a research lab (SIAL) of an architecture and design school, yet combines HCI (Human Computer Interaction), sound design and computer science. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE More's design work and research in the project gained significant recognition when it was selected as an exhibit in the Design and the Elastic Mind exhibition at Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA, 2008. As a trans-disciplinary project Eureka was successfully integrated and developed as part of an ARC Discovery grant (Complex Systems, 2003-2005, CIs Mark Burry and Lin Padgham). Eureka prototypes were utilised in numerous international keynote presentations by CI Burry, including a significant presentation to The Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC, 2005) to then Prime Minister John Howard.
