EU-Funded Citizen Science Projects — Systematic Term Search Dataset (FP7, H2020, Horizon Europe, LIFE)

A harmonised, openly licensed dataset of 367 EU-funded research and environmental projects that explicitly reference citizen science or related methodologies in their title, abstract, or keyword fields. Covers four European funding frameworks: FP7, H2020, Horizon Europe, and the LIFE Programme. Method: bulk download of CORDIS project exports (project.csv inside each framework ZIP) and manual export of the LIFE Project Portfolio (LIFE ALL.xlsx). Exact, case-insensitive substring search across the fields title, objective/project description, and keywords, using 19 predefined terms from the citizen science vocabulary. Projects matching at least one term are retained; the matched_terms column records which term(s) triggered the match, providing a full audit trail. Search terms: citizen science, civic science, amateur science, participatory science, contributory science, collaborative science, community science, crowd science, crowdsourced science, crowdsourcing science, crowdsourcing research, crowdfunding science, public participation in scientific research, volunteer monitoring, volunteer-based monitoring, volunteer thinking, volunteer computing, passive sensing, participatory sensing. Source snapshot dates: FP7 → December 2024; H2020 and Horizon Europe → April 2026; LIFE Programme → April 2026. Results: 367 projects (FP7: 10; H2020: 154; Horizon Europe: 167; LIFE: 36). The term "citizen science" accounts for 338 of 367 matches (92%); secondary terms include participatory science (16), participatory sensing (9) and collaborative science (6).
