Population genomics of African Cape buffalo in South Africa

The goal of this study was to conduct a population genomics analysis of four major Cape buffalo populations in South Africa, namely Kruger National Park, Mokala National Park (of Kruger origin), Addo Elephant National Park and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. Using low-coverage whole-genome re-sequencing and the Cape buffalo reference genome published by Glanzmann et al. (2016), we investigated demographic history, genomic diversity, inbreeding and genetic structure with the goal to contribute to conservation management of these populations and the species in general.
