#Information on data files deposited on Zenodo for the manuscript "Climate explains island-mainland differences in plumage darkness in birds". Data was collected and processed as described in the manuscript. Note: Any comments or additional requests can be directed to anamvleitao@gmail.com Files and variables File: evocolorisla_comparative_030726_filtered.csv Description: dataset used for the statistical analysis Variables "sequence": Unique internal identifier for each record in the database. "sequence_sex" Unique internal identifier for each record–sex combination. "pairID": Identifier of the island–mainland species pair used in comparative analyses. "species_name_Clements_Ebird": Species name following the Clements/eBird taxonomy. "species_name_Jetz_Birdtree": Species name following the Jetz/BirdTree taxonomy used for phylogenetic analyses. "mctavish_phy": Species name as represented in the McTavish et al. (2025) phylogeny. "Order": Taxonomic order of the species. "Family": Taxonomic family of the species. "IslandMainland": Categorical variable, classified as either Island (island endemic) or Mainland (closest mainland relative). "sex": Sex of the individual (Male or Female). "brightness": Plumage achromatic reflectance derived from avian visual modelling; lower values indicate darker plumage. "annual_precipitation": Mean annual precipitation associated with the species' distribution. "temperature_average": Mean annual temperature associated with the species' distribution. "latitud": Absolute latitude (degrees from the equator) associated with the species' distribution. "Body_mass": Mean body mass (g), recorded separately for each sex where available; otherwise, the overall species mean body mass. "total_area": Total land area (km²) occupied by the island system associated with the species. "largest_isl_area": Area (km²) of the largest island within the island system. "island_name": Name of the island occupied by the endemic species. "archipelago": Name of the archipelago to which the island belongs. File: Comparative_analysis_brightness_v5..Rmd Description: The R HTML File contains the script describing all the steps for the the analysis and also shows the codes for the plots produced in the manuscript. File: summary_dated_clements.nex Description: Maximum clade credibility (consensus), time-calibrated phylogenetic tree from the global avian phylogeny of McTavish et al. (2025) in NEXUS format. Tip labels follow the Clements taxonomy and were used to match species names in the dataset and generate the phylogenetic covariance structure used in the Bayesian phylogenetic analyses. Code/software R and R studio Packages Described in the R script.
