Enterococcus faecalis is a member of the natural intestinal microbiota of humans and animals and is capable of causing opportunistic infections. It is also used as starter cultures in the food industry as well as in health supplements and probiotics by the pharmaceutical industry. This Janus-faced status is based on the presence or absence of pathogenic traits. Here, we report the complete and annotated genome sequence of the probiotic E. faecalis Symbioflor 1 clone DSM 16431, included in a commercial probiotic product used for more than fifty years without any reports of infection. The genome sequence enables comparative genomic analyses of pathogenic and non-pathogenic enterococci and will provide new insights into the biology of this non-pathogenic and probiotic microorganism.
