Factors Associated with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 Infection in Hohoe Municipality, Ghana: A Case-Control Study

This dataset was generated from a facility-based age- and sex-matched case-control study conducted in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region of Ghana. The study aimed to identify factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and contribute evidence to inform public health surveillance, preparedness, and response strategies for current and future infectious disease outbreaks. The study population comprised adults aged 18 years and above who underwent SARS-CoV-2 testing by Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) or rapid antigen testing between March 2020 and December 2021. Cases were individuals with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, while controls were individuals who tested negative and were matched to cases by age (±5 years) and sex in a 1:2 ratio. Data were collected between September and October 2023 using a structured questionnaire administered through face-to-face interviews. Information captured includes sociodemographic characteristics, household characteristics, health insurance status, medical history, underlying health conditions, physical activity, smoking and substance use, contact history, travel history, social interaction patterns, healthcare exposure, and other factors related to potential SARS-CoV-2 exposure. The anonymized dataset contains no direct personal identifiers. Variables that could potentially identify participants, including names, telephone numbers, addresses, and other personal identifiers, were removed prior to public sharing. Each participant is represented by a unique study identification code that has no linkage to individual identities. The dataset supports the findings reported in the manuscript titled “Factors Associated with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 Infection in Hohoe Municipality, Ghana: A Case-Control Study.” Researchers may use the data for secondary analyses, epidemiological investigations, teaching, and methodological research related to infectious disease epidemiology and public health.
