Correspondence was referred to the Law Department by other offices and Departments such as the Colonial Secretary and Chief Secretary, the Board of Land and Works or the Chief Commissioner of Police for comment or for an opinion. This correspondence would be annotated (or minuted) and the original document then returned to its originator. Before final return the document may have been also referred to a third party for noting or for comment.This series records such pieces of correspondence referred to the Law Department. Details entered were the number and date of the document, by whom it was written and by whom it was referred, the subject of the document and when it was received and returned and a note of whether an opinion was given or a minute written upon it. If the document was referred to a third party details to whom, for what purpose, the date of referral and the date of return are given.
