Human history and evolution has been strongly influenced by infectious diseases. Modern pandemics (eg: COVID-19, influenza) show that human movement results in rapid global dispersal, but much less is known with certainty about parasite dispersal in antiquity. Here we describe the dispersal of the Leishmania donovani species complex (LDSC), protozoans that cause visceral leishmaniasis (VL). We sequence the genomes of 192 LDSC isolates from Brazil, Europe and the Middle East to contribute to the growing LDSC collection.
