Nickerson et al., Normalized Total Growth Data

The file contains the normalized total growth values for 15 phylogenetically diverse fungal species grown on 6 different phenolic compounds. We calculated total growth (i.e., optical density measurement number five − optical density measurement number one = total optical density). Next, the average optical density value of the negative control wells for each plate was subtracted from the total optical density in each well to account for any potential instrument noise. Finally, we normalized total optical density in each well by dividing it by the mean optical density in the positive control wells (i.e., wells with no phenolic compounds) in the same two columns to account for slight differences in the amount of starting inoculum among wells, likely due to minor variation in mycelial particle size after homogenization. After normalization, values greater than one indicate fungal growth greater than the positive control (i.e., enhanced growth), whereas values less than one indicate less growth than the positive control (i.e., inhibited growth).
