Evaluation of porcine fecal microbiomes after exposure to ceftriaxone

A porcine model of antibiotic-mediated gut microbiome dysbiosis was developed and used to evaluate the protective effect of an intestinal antibiotic degradation strategy on the gut microflora. An engineered beta-lactamase enzyme was formulated for oral delivery and evaluated in pigs receiving ceftriaxone. The microbiomes of pigs receiving ceftriaxone alone or ceftriaxone and the beta-lactamase were compared using whole genome shotgun metagenomics analyses of the fecal DNA.
