Groundwater Monitoring (MWP)

<p>Polish Geological Institute-NRI fulfills tasks of the state hydrogeological survey by conducting hydrogeological measurements and observations throughout the country (Article 380, the Water Law Act of 20th July 2017). It maintains and develops a groundwater observation and research network. The network currently contains around 1470 monitoring points, which are used for monitoring of the chemical groundwater status (ca. 1400 for surveillance and ca. 400 for operational monitoring) and the quantitative groundwater status (ca. 1100 points). Measurements of groundwater level are performed manually or automatically. From 2021, the automatic measurement system (with GPRS data transmission) consists of almost 670 measurement devices installed at the groundwater monitoring points. In addition, research monitoring is carried out in areas at risk of strong anthropogenic pressure and along borders of the country.</p> <p><strong>Groundwater Monitoring Database (Monitoring Wód Podziemnych (MWP):</strong></p> <ul> <li>information about monitoring points,</li> <li>measurements of groundwater level as a depth to a watertable in metres [m],</li> <li>springs’ discharges [l/s],</li> <li>groundwater chemical composition and quality,</li> <li>temperature measurements [°C] (automatic measurement),</li> <li>results of atmospheric pressure measurements [hPa] (automatic measurement).</li> </ul> <p>Measurements of the water table and the efficiency of the springs are made manually once a week, on Monday at 6.00 UTC, and at selected points automatically, daily at 6.00 UTC. The database is supplied with measurements once a month.</p> <p><strong>Automatic Measurements Database (Pomiary Automatyczne (PA):</strong></p> <ul> <li>results of measurements of the pressure of water column above the measuring device [bar] (the sum of the pressures of the water column above the measuring point and the atmospheric pressure),</li> <li>results of water temperature measurements in vicinity of a measuring sensor [°C],</li> <li>results of measurements of atmospheric pressure [bar].</li> </ul> <p>The database contains results of raw pressure and temperature measurements performed automatically by devices installed in groundwater monitoring points, with a frequency of once an hour. Measurement data, via data transmission (GSM networks), are sent on an ongoing basis to the PIG – PIB servers.</p>
