Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) is a causal agent for diarrheal disease and contribute to the burden of mortality for the children under five years old. Although antibiotics are still a major treatment option for EPEC, searching for novel alternatives to antibiotics have been one of the key research areas due to the rapid emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance strains. In this study, we investigated if the anthocyanin malvidin 3-glucoside (MG) can be used to alleviate EPEC-associated phenotypes using a Citrobacter rodentium induced mouse model using a multi-omics approach. MG supplementation restored the bodyweight loss in C. rodentium infected mice and improved the colon crypt length and histopathological scores.
