On behalf of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation´s (KAS) Department of Politics and Consultancy, USUMA GmbH in Berlin conducted a representative survey on the topic of "Attitudes towards values and religion of Germans with and without a migration background and foreigners in Germany" between 15 October 2018 and 28 February 2019. The basic population for this was the population aged 18 and over living in private households in Germany. The study was to be conducted for 3 subgroups and to represent each of these subgroups. The three representative sub-samples included: Germans without a migration background aged 18 and over, Germans with a migration background aged 18 and over and foreigners living in Germany aged 18 and over.<br>Country of birth; year of (first) move to the present territory of the Federal Republic of Germany; German nationality; foreign nationality(ies); German nationality by birth, as a resettler/ late repatriate without naturalisation, as a resettler/ late repatriate with naturalisation or by naturalisation; year of naturalisation; nationality before moving in as a resettler/ late repatriate or before naturalisation; nationality of parents; country of birth of parents; present national territory of mother/ father; attachment to country of origin; residence status; religious affiliation; nationality of parents; country of birth of mother/father; attachment to country of origin; religious affiliation. Year of naturalisation; citizenship before moving in as (late) emigrant or before naturalisation; citizenship of parents; country of birth of parents; current territory of mother´s/father´s country of origin; attachment to country of origin; residence status; religious affiliation; religious group affiliation within Islam; marital status; number of marriages/registered partnerships; stable partnership; religiosity; frequency of church attendance; attitude to church: church affiliation; change in church affiliation; non-denominational: former denomination; reasons for leaving church (e.g. no particular reason, personal reasons in general, reasons of conviction - don´t believe in God (any more), church doesn´t bring me anything (any more), new orientation in life, etc.); willingness to join a religious community or denomination; party preference (Sunday question); alternative election decision; important aspects in a possible election decision for the CDU (the Christianity in the CDU, the social, the liberal, the conservative, that it solves problems); satisfaction with democracy; evaluation of the political system in Germany compared to that in the country of origin; agreement with various statements on politics, state and society (in every democratic society there are conflicts that have to be settled with violence, children under 3 should be looked after at home, my children should be brought up religiously, the state should protect my faith better against insult, insulting religions should be banned, in democracy decisions take too long, politics reacts far too slowly to problems, my traditional way of life is threatened, in education children may also be beaten sometimes, diligence and ambition should pay off, I like to let things take their course, abortion should be forbidden as a matter of principle, a terminally ill person should be granted euthanasia at his request); value preferences (e.g. creativity, money, safe environment, modesty, fun, success, being respected, etc.); personal importance of fundamental rights (equal treatment before the law, equal opportunities, freedom of expression, equal rights for men and women, freedom of belief, freedom of the press and free research, right to demonstrate, social protection by the state as comprehensive as possible, low income differences); compliance with fundamental rights in Germany (equal treatment before the law, freedom of expression, freedom of the press and free research, comprehensive social protection by the state); Attitude towards religious symbols at state institutions (Christian judge visibly wears a cross, Muslim judge wears a headscarf, Jewish judge wears a kippah); personal faith (drawing comfort and strength from faith, belief in life after death, belief in the devil, belief in God, belief in a supernatural power, belief in rebirth); religiosity of parental home; Christians and non-denominational: Church and religious rituals: baptised in church, baptism of children, married in church; willingness to be married in church; church wedding in the case of a previous marriage; willingness to be married in church again; dissolution or Willingness to have a church wedding again; dissolution or annulment of the first Catholic marriage by the Catholic Church; fasting for religious reasons; wish for a church funeral or a funeral according to religious rules; willingness to have contact with other religions (visit a church/mosque if there was a festival there); tolerance towards people of other faiths; donations to charities and organisations; religious background of the organisation; frequency of prayers; non-Christians: personal reaction to the wish of a family member to become a Christian, a Muslim or a Jew; opinion on becoming a Christian, a Muslim or a Jew; opinion on a strictly religious lifestyle; acceptance of people who live by strict Christian, Muslim or Jewish rules; acceptance of a Christian, Muslim or Jew as daughter´s spouse; opinion on same-sex marriage.
Demography: sex; age; highest educational attainment in country of origin or in Germany; years of schooling in country of origin; highest general education attainment; highest vocational attainment; employment status; situation if not currently employed; occupational status; religiosity (100-point scale); accessibility: mobile phone call: mobile phone use alone, also with others or only randomly; number of other mobile phone users aged 18 and over; landline in the household; number of mobile phone numbers on which the respondent can be reached by phone; number of landline numbers in the household; federal state; city size (political municipality size); household size; number of persons in the household under 18; willingness to be interviewed again.
Additionally coded were: Respondent ID; weighting factors; group affiliation (Germans without migration background, Germans with migration background, foreigners); corrected country of origin; filter; number of ethnic Turks total, ethnic Turkish migrants and ethnic Turkish foreigners; Number of people of Russian origin total, migrants of Russian origin and foreigners of Russian origin; Number of people of Polish origin total, migrants of Polish origin and foreigners of Polish origin; Migration background group (Germans without migration background, ethnic German immigrants, people of Turkish origin, people of Russian origin, people of Polish origin).
