How does digital village construction affect farmers’ enthusiasm for grain cultivation?

Objective This study aims to investigate the impact and mechanism of digital rural construction on farmers’ willingness to plant crops，in order to provide theoretical basis for stimulating farmers’ enthusiasm for grain cultivation，guiding farmers to plant double cropping rice，and enhancing national food security. Method Based on survey data from rice growers in Jiangxi Province，this article matches the micro data of farmers with the county-level digital rural index，and uses an ordered Probit model to empirically analyze the impact and mechanism of digital rural construction on farmers’ enthusiasm for grain cultivation. Result The construction of digital rural areas has a positive impact on farmers’ enthusiasm for grain cultivation at a significance level of 1%，making them more inclined to plant double-cropping rice.After considering endogeneity issues and conducting robustness tests，this conclusion still holds true.Mechanism analysis shows that the construction of digital rural areas can improve farmers’ digital literacy，expand land management scale，and promote the use of agricultural machinery to increase their enthusiasm for growing crops and encourage them to plant double cropping rice.Heterogeneity analysis shows that the construction of digital rural areas has a more significant promoting effect on the enthusiasm of farmers in non-plain areas，areas with higher economic development levels，and households with low non-agricultural income to grow crops. Conclusion In order to guide farmers to actively grow crops，we should deepen the construction of digital villages，alleviate the problem of digital divide，continuously improve farmers’ digital literacy，continue to promote moderate scale agricultural operations，and enhance the level of agricultural machinery application.
