Experts were asked to provide probabilistic judgements of whether individual samples belonged to either of the ecological communities based on data drawn from standard floristic plot surveys. Experts were provided with 30 "sites" (14 in common) drawn from a total pool of 100. Each included a complete inventory of vascular plant species within a fixed area plot (20m x 20m), estimated cover-abundance for each species (Braun‐Blanquet 1932), elevation, mean annual rainfall and substrate.
