Multi-omic analysis of methane inhibition

The objective of this study was to investigate the consequences of methanogenesis inhibition on the relationship between rumen microbiota and host metabolism. An experiment of twenty-five dairy cows was set up, 13 were used as controls and 12 were fed with 3-NOP, a methanogenesis inhibitor, for six weeks before rumen fluid and plasma sampling. Rumen microbiota was characterized on the rumen fluid by metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, and host metabolome was characterized on the plasma by a combination of nuclear magnetic resonance and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
