Evolution of emissions of NMVOC, SO2, CO and dioxins and PCBs

(Non-methane) volatile organic compounds ((NM) VOCs) are gaseous substances composed mainly of carbon and hydrogen atoms. They are often bad for health and/or the environment. Some VOCs (e.g. benzene) are carcinogenic, others threaten the ozone layer. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) may arise from the combustion of fossil fuels containing sulphur. This gas contributes to acidification of soil and water. Acidification is detrimental to the environment and affects buildings. Carbon monoxide (CO) is generated by incomplete combustion. High concentrations are particularly found in poorly ventilated spaces with old heating installations. Exposure to CO may lead to death. Dioxins and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are produced by incomplete combustion of organic material containing chlorine. We also find them in scrap. If they reach our water and food via air, they can accumulate in our fat tissue and harm health.
