An 1896 specimen from an expedition by Nelson and Goldman helps clarify the phylogenetic placement of the rare Mexican endemic Hooper's deer mouse

We analyzed a specimen of Peromyscus hooperi collected in 1896 and other species of neotomines using genome-wide data to resolve the phylogenetic placement of P. hooperi. We confirmed its monophyly and recognized its genetic uniqueness. We dated the origin of P. hooperi during the Pliocene.
