Thermoacidophiles are already being used in bioleaching (removal or solubilization of economic metals that are still present in low concentrations in mine tailings). The potential of these organisms in such a process or in bioremediation of heavy metal contaminated sites (the isolates were obtained from a deep-sea vent sites with high concentrations of As, Se and Rb; and of course Cu, Fe and Zn) has not yet been investigated.
