STYLISTIC AND PRAGMATIC FEATURES OF SPEECH ACTS IN A LITERARY TEXT (BASED ON F. SCOTT FITZGERALD'S "THE GREAT GATSBY")

Abstract: This article examines the stylistic and pragmatic features of speech acts in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. The study focuses on how assertive, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative speech acts reveal character, mark social hierarchy, express hidden intentions and intensify communicative conflict. The article argues that the idiolects of Gatsby, Daisy, Tom, Nick, Jordan and Myrtle, together with irony, silence, indirect response, excuse-making and social performance, transform speech acts into significant stylistic devices of the literary text. The analysis shows that Fitzgerald’s dialogue is not merely a means of transmitting information; it is a complex pragmatic field in which desire, deception, class pressure and emotional instability are encoded.
