Polypterus senegalus gill RNA-seq (Terrestrial and aquatic environments)

We revealed the existence of cilia in the internal gills of Polypterus senegalus. Interestingly, we found that the cilia disappeared when Polypterus was reared in terrestrial environments. We reared Polypterus in water and on land, and sequenced the RNA of their internal gills and analyzed the changes in expression levels. RNA-seq analysis showed changes in expression levels in genes related to ciliary movement. This suggests that the cilia in the internal gill are motile cilia.
