## **Abstract** \n\nThis dataset and its metadata statement were supplied to the Bioregional Assessment Programme by a third party and are presented here as originally supplied.\n\n\n\nThe Australian Geological Provinces Database contains descriptions and spatial extents of the fundamental geological \n\nelements of the Australian continent and immediate surrounds. Captured province types include sedimentary basins, \n\ntectonic provinces such as cratons and orogens, igneous provinces, and metallogenic provinces. Spatial data has \n\nbeen captured largely at approximately 1:1M scale for best use at between 1:2M to 1:5M scale\n\n\n\nWhere possible, provinces have been attributed with their age, contained lithostratigraphic units, relationships \n\nto other provinces, and geological history. The geological definition of some provinces, in particular certain \n\nsedimentary basins and orogens, is contentious. While every effort has been made to achieve a consensus \n\ninterpretation of each province, scientific debate may still occur about the nature and extent of some provinces.\n\n\n\nThe total 2D spatial extent of most provinces in the database has been captured (ie, the full extent of a province \n\nunder any overlying cover). The extent of outcrop of some provinces has also been captured. Where possible, the \n\nfull extent outlines of provinces have been attributed with information about the source, accuracy, and observation \n\nmethod of those lines.\n\n\n\nFeature Classes\n\n\n\nProvinceFullExtent - polygons showing the full 2D spatial extent of a province. This includes non-outcropping \n\nregions of a province that may be concealed by regolith or other overlying provinces. The ProvinceFullExtent\n\nfeature class has two related tables, linked through relationship classes:\n\n\n\n- ProvinceRelations - this table lists relationships between provinces (eg, the Surat Basin overlies the \n\nBowen Basin)\n\n- ProvinceStratigraphy - this table list the stratigraphic units contained within a province. Full details of \n\neach stratigraphic unit are available at http://dbforms.ga.gov.au/www/geodx.strat_units.int\n\n\n\nProvinceOutcrop - polygons showing the outcropping extent of a province. Note that not all provinces have this \n\ndata available.\n\n\n\nProvinceFullExtentBdy - lines overlying the margins of province full extent polygons showing the nature of contacts \n\nbetween provinces, data source, and spatial accuracy. Note that not all provinces have this data available.\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nThe spatial data (polygons and lines) was compiled typically at or around 1:1 million scale from a wide range of published surface geology maps, bedrock or basement geology maps, borehole data, and geophysical imagery. Where province boundaries crossed jurisdictional borders, Geoscience Australia worked with State and Territory geological agencies to achieve an agreed spatial extent. Descriptive attribute data was compiled from authoritative published literature wherever possible, and names of these references are supplied with the data. Not all the data in this edition of the dataset (2013.01) has undergone rigorous quality control. All province descriptions in this edition of the dataset contain an indication of whether the data has been checked or not.\n\n\n\nFurther information can be found at http://www.ga.gov.au/metadata-gateway/metadata/record/gcat_c3fac1d5-48c1-624e-e044-00144fdd4fa6/Australian+Geological+Provinces%2C+2013.01+edition\n\n## **Dataset Citation** \n\nGeoscience Australia (2013) Geological Provinces - Full Extent.
