The data in this dataset is sourced from the OSCAR_L4_OC_third-deg dataset developed and released by NASA. It includes netCDF (nc) format data of 1/3° resolution ocean current fields at 5-day intervals from January 1993 to September 2021. The latitude/longitude coordinates, U and V velocity components stored in the original nc files are split along the time dimension, converted into 5-day interval time-series data, and then transformed into TIFF format. The total size of the dataset is 7.43 GB.
OSCAR (Ocean Surface Current Analysis Real-time) provides near-surface ocean current estimates derived using quasi-linear and steady-state flow momentum equations. Horizontal velocities are directly estimated from sea surface height, sea surface vector winds, and sea surface temperature. These data are collected from various satellites and in-situ instruments. The model formulation combines geostrophic, Ekman, and Stommel shear dynamics, along with supplementary terms derived from surface buoyancy gradients. The data are gridded at a 1/3-degree spatial resolution with a 5-day temporal resolution.
