An autochthonous chikungunya outbreak is ongoingnear Anzio, a coastal town in the province of Rome and in Guardavalle, in Calabria region. Thevirus isolated from one patient and mosquitoes lacksthe A226V mutation and belongs to an East CentralSouth African strain. The outbreak proximity tothe capital, its late summer occurrence, and diagnosticdelays, are favouring transmission. Vector control,enhanced surveillance and restricted blood donationsare being implemented in affected areas.
