Role for the oxyS Gene in Regulation of Intracellular Hydrogen Peroxide in Escherichia coli

Intracellular hydrogen peroxide is regulated in Escherichia coli by OxyR in response to the metabolic production of H(2)O(2). Here, we show that the untranslated oxyS RNA controlled by OxyR has a role in this regulation. The oxyS transcript appears to affect the metabolic output of H(2)O(2) rather than the removal of H(2)O(2) by catalases-hydroperoxidases.
