The TRUST I dataset was collaboratively created by the Space Telescope Science Institute and multiple astronomical observation institutions, serving as a 3D externally illuminated flat-panel benchmark for dust radiative transfer simulations. It encompasses a wide range of dust optical depths, ranging from optically thin conditions across all wavelengths to optically thick scenarios for most wavelengths. The dataset is developed to test various components of radiative transfer problems, including dust absorption, scattering, and emission, and includes solutions for complete dust emission such as single-photon (stochastic) heating, alongside two simplifying assumptions: all dust grains are assumed to be in equilibrium with the radiation field, and emission originates from a single effective grain whose properties are averaged over the grain size distribution. The application scope of this dataset includes dust radiative transfer simulations in astrophysics, which aim to resolve the problem of how dust absorbs and re-emits ultraviolet to near-infrared photons, and re-radiates the absorbed energy in the infrared and submillimeter wavelength bands.
