In 2023, the average retail price for a 20-stick pack of cigarettes in Singapore was 14.87 Singapore dollars. Tobacco and tobacco products are heavily taxed in Singapore, as part of the government efforts to reduce the rate of smoking. Efforts to reduce tobacco consumptionThe National Tobacco Control Program, or NTCP for short, is a program initiated in 1986 by the Singaporean Ministry of Health to reduce smoking rates in Singapore. Several measures have since been implemented in an effort to reduce smoking rates, such as imposing high taxes and introducing standardized package for tobacco products. Furthermore, the variety of tobacco products available in Singapore is strictly controlled; products such as shisha tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco, and electronic vaporizers are banned in the country. Towards a nation of non-smokersAlthough Singapore has one of the world’s lowest smoking rates, the smoking rate among males has increased in years prior to 2016, whereas the prevalence of smoking among females has slightly declined. With the prevalence of smoking estimated to increase among the adult population until 2025, it is clear that this ongoing, long-term program still has a long road ahead to achieve the set goal.
