Sapelo Island: A Proposal for Conducting and Archaeological Survey at High Point Plantation, Sapelo Island, Georgia

High Point presents and intriguing archaeological challenge. Although it is documented as a location for one of the earliest historic occupations on the Island, only the (presumably) postbellum features have been recorded there. In an effort to obtain a clearer picture of the entire history of the site, the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Geography at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) proposes to conduct a modified systematic survey at High Point of screened half-meter test pits. Fieldwork will occur from May 8 through June 5, 2007. Under the direction of Principal Investigator Dr. Nicholas Honerkamp, the overall goals of the survey will be to define the spatial, temporal and (as far as possible) the functional parameters of High Point. Locating the suspected 18th century component will be attempted through the construction of ceramic type artifact density. Since this is a multicomponent site, it is expected that baseline data on the presence and extent of several occupations will be generated. The proposed survey represents the first time that a systematic archaeological approach has been attempted at this site. The discovery-level data generated from this approach is critical for assessing the presence, extent, and condition of the High Point archaeological record for use in site interpretation and in planning for future research and conservation.
