VPRS 7637 Inwards Correspondence and General Papers

This series largely consists of correspondence sent to the Secretary to the Royal Commission upon the Parliament Buildings (commonly known as the Parliament Buildings Commission), although there are also minutes of the Commission, copies of outward correspondence and printed reports included within the series. The Secretary to the Commission, George H. Jenkins, was also at times, the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly.The Royal Commission upon the Parliament Buildings was set up in 1877 at the instigation of the Parliamentary Buildings Committee (a Joint House Committee) to superintend the completion of the Parliament Houses with the least possible delay. This involved ensuring work was expressly and satisfactorily carried out on the building, renovation and decoration of the Parliament Houses. It appears that the Commission was also concerned with work undertaken on the Parliamentary Reserve and Gardens.
