This study first collected over 1,200 field experiment data from the Yellow River Basin (including 500+ for wheat, 600+ for maize, and approximately 70 for soybean). Then, the study utilized these field experiment data to divide the Yellow River Basin into different sub-regions and established different crop water production functions for different sub-regions. Based on the crop water production functions, the study further used 1km crop yield dataset to calculate water consumption, obtaining the 1km dataset of water consumption and irrigation. The crop yield dataset was obtained by calibrating the SPAM data at the prefecture-level city scale.The dataset offers water consumption and irrigation dataset for major grain crops (wheat, maize, soybean) along the Yellow River Basin at a 1-km spatial resolution from 2000 to 2020 at 5-year intervals. The spatial scope of the dataset covers 66 prefecture-level cities that have spatial intersections with the Yellow River Basin.Data naming convention: Data storage format is "AAAA_TTTT_XXXX_YYYY_MMM.tif". In this format, "AAAA" represents the data category, "wate" for water consumption and "irri" for irrigation. "TTTT" denotes whether the value reflects per-unit-area or total quantity, with "unit" for per-unit-area quantity and "tota" for total quantity. "XXXX" represents crop type, with "whea" for wheat, "maiz" for maize, and "soyb" for soybean. "YYYY" indicates the year. "MMM" denotes the upper and lower bounds of the 90% confidence interval for the dataset, with "max" for the upper bound and "min" for the lower bound.
