Differences in leaf herbivory rates of laurel and beech trees in subtropical evergreen forest are explained by leaf functional traits

This study reveals different growth and defense strategies in co-dominant tree species of subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests. Laurels prioritize resource allocation to leaf defense, while beeches favor growth, contributing to their coexistence and potentially stabilizing ecosystem functioning. These findings advance our understanding of plant–herbivore interactions and adaptive strategies in species-rich forest ecosystems.
