Presumed Aseptic Hip and Knee Implant Microbiota

Bacteria have been detected in hip and knee implants requiring revision for presumed aseptic loosening, leading to the hypothesis that presumed aseptic loosening may, in fact, be driven by undetected implant-associated microorganisms. This study aimed to characterize these communities in greater detail, and to evaluate potential limitations of applying 16S rRNA gene sequencing to presumed aseptic hip/knee implant samples.
